You are going to learn my cozy process (yes step by step and confusion & fluff-proof) to figuring out your brand voice so you can write personality-packed copy that will also-freakin-lutely swoon your audience⎯ turning strangers into sweet take-my-money customers.
Understanding Brand Voice
First of all, what is a brand voice?
To put things in simple terms, your brand voice is your brand’s one-of-a-kind personality and style – how your brand communicates.
It encompasses what you say and how you say it.
This includes⎯
- Your tone
- Word choice
- Language
- The overall vibe of your message
Essentially, it’s the emotion and feeling you leave your audience with after they’ve read an email from you, scanned your website, or consumed your content.
Don’t worry, I know this sounds … “fluffy” we’re going to get into it.
Why is having a solid Brand Voice so freakin’ Important?
- Brand Recognition: A unique brand personality makes you and your business memorable and sets you apart from the crowd (goodbye competitor paralysis 👋)
- Relationship Building: Your brand voice helps create a 🪐special universe🪐 for your audience⎯ where they feel safe, seen, and heard. It builds the know, like, and trust factor which is crucial for long-term relationships with your audience.
The ✨Magic Ingredients✨ of a personality-packed brand voice
1. Values
Your brand voice is deeply rooted in your values.
These are the principles that guide you in life and business.
For example, some of my values are freedom, cozy vibes, dreaming big, realness, connection, and being introvert-proof.
How to Discover Your Values:
- Google “values list” and highlight the words that resonate with you.
- Choose no more than 5 values to keep it simple and memorable.
2. Brand Tone
Brand tone is the energy and emotion behind your copy. It’s how you communicate in your website copy, emails, and content, and how your audience perceives it.
Examples of Brand Tones:
- Formal: Polished, professional, and corporate sounding.
- Informal: Casual, conversational, and friendly.
- Friendly vs. Authoritative: Warm and approachable vs. confident and knowledgeable.
- Enthusiastic vs. Calm: Excited and energetic vs. soothing and composed.
3. Audience
Your audience plays a crucial role in shaping your brand voice. Understanding their needs, preferences, and language helps you tailor your communication to resonate with them.
How to Research Your Audience:
- Survey your audience.
- Engage in conversations with them.
- Observe and take notes on the words and phrases they commonly use.
4. Brand Glossary
Create a list of go-to words and phrases that reflect your brand voice. Also, include words and phrases you avoid to maintain consistency.
Tips for Creating a Brand Glossary:
- Keep a running document of your common sayings and phrases.
- Note any fun or unique phrases you come across that align with your brand.
5. The Fun Stuff!
Infuse your brand voice with humor and references that resonate with your audience.
(Because hopefully, you have some humor?)
This will for sure make your content more relatable and engaging (and fun).
Examples:
- Use emojis that reflect your brand’s personality (I love a good ☕️ and 🍫 because my audience knows I am all about the cozy vibes)
- GIFS baby!
- Incorporate pop culture references or memes that your audience will recognize and enjoy
Using AI to Refine (and find) Your Brand Voice
Here’s that genius AI prompt to help you audit and refine your brand voice:
“I am a [your title] who helps [audience] with [problem] so that they can [solution]. Audit my brand voice in the text following: [enter IG caption, email, website copy – anything you have written in the past]. What is my brand personality? What sticks out? How would you describe my brand if it were a person?”
See what ChatGPT (or other) spits out.
I did this as a fun exercise to make sure the words I was writing were actually a match for my values and my brand personality.
And … it checked out! 🥰
Try it for yourself.
Let me know in the comments below what it says, k?
Was it a match?
Do you need to tweak your copy?
What’s up? 👀
Let’s sum up, shall we?
Discovering your brand voice can take time, especially if you are new to creating content online.
It took me about 2 years to really find my voice and be confident in it.
For a while there, I caught myself sounding like every other marketer online and I was all …
“Where’s Mia?”
Make sure you exist in your brand voice⎯ and not someone else.
Woop! Now you have the ingredients to get started.
